The part you cannot see

Hardscape fails from the bottom up.

A patio that heaves, a wall that leans and a walkway that goes wavy all failed for the same reason. The base.

Long Island freezes and thaws. Water that sits under stone turns to ice and lifts it. So the base gets excavated deeper than most people expect, compacted in lifts, and drained. That is the part nobody photographs and it is the part that decides whether the work looks the same in ten years.

Above the base, stone gets set rather than stacked. Fieldstone and boulder are placed on their natural bed with their weight carrying down through the wall, not balanced on a face. It is slower and it does not move.

We work in bluestone, limestone, fieldstone, brick and concrete paver. Which one you use is a design decision, not a price decision, and it should answer to the house and the planting rather than to a catalogue.

How deep does the base go?

Deeper than most quotes assume. It depends on the soil and the use, but a patio base that was not excavated and compacted properly will move in the first few freeze cycles, and no amount of good stone on top saves it.

Bluestone or paver?

Bluestone is natural, irregular in colour, and reads older. Paver is uniform, usually cheaper, and easier to match years later if something needs replacing. Both are fine. The house should decide.

Will the patio sink?

Not if the base is right and the drainage is right. Those are the two things that make hardscape last, and they are the two things people cut when they are comparing prices.

Do you build outdoor kitchens?

Yes, stone base and counter with the openings framed for whatever appliances you have chosen. Bring us the appliance spec sheets early, they set the dimensions.

Can you match existing stone?

Often, though natural stone varies by quarry and by year, so an exact match is not always possible. We will show you options before we order.

Do you do the planting too?

Yes. Hardscape and planting are the same project. A wall looks unfinished until something is growing over it.
