Front yard landscape design and planting by Scott Anderson Design in Bellmore, New York

An architect who builds what he draws.

Scott earned a Bachelor of Architecture at NYIT before he ever built a pond. Every property still starts as a drawing on paper, and the crew that builds it is the one that read the plan.

How we work

Most landscapers plant. We design first.

There is a difference between choosing shrubs and designing a property. One takes an afternoon. The other takes a plan.

We start by walking the property and looking at grade, drainage, sun, soil and sightlines. Where does water go when it rains hard. What do you see from the kitchen window. Which trees are worth keeping and which are quietly killing everything under them. Where does the yard actually get used.

Then Scott draws it. By hand, to scale, on paper. Beds, structure, grading, hardscape, planting, lighting and water. You see the whole property before anyone touches a shovel, and changes at that stage cost nothing.

The build is the same crew. Nobody hands a drawing to a subcontractor and hopes. That is the reason our plans and our finished yards look like the same thing.

Before the shovel

You see the plan before we dig.

Changes on paper are free. Changes in the ground are not. That is the entire argument for designing before building, and it is why a drawing is the first thing you get from us rather than a quote with a plant list stapled to it.

Questions

The things people actually ask.

If yours is not here, call.

Can I hire you just for the design?
Yes. You get a hand drawn plan you can build from, with us or with anyone. Plenty of people do the design with Scott and phase the build over a few seasons.
How long does the design take?
Two to four weeks from the site walk to a drawing in your hands, depending on how big the property is and how much of it we are touching.
Do you do the planting yourselves?
Yes. The same crew that reads the plan does the grading, the stone, the planting and the lighting. Nothing gets handed off.
What if I only want part of it done now?
That is normal and it is a good reason to design the whole property first. We draw the finished thing, then build it in phases so each stage looks complete on its own.
Will you work with plants I already have?
Where they are worth keeping, yes. Part of the site walk is deciding what stays, what gets moved and what is quietly holding the yard back.
Do you handle drainage?
Yes, and on a lot of Long Island properties it is the first thing that needs solving. There is no point planting a bed that sits under water every spring.
